چکیده
As an introduction for non-specialists to the Special Issue on snow avalanche dynamics, this paper first outlines how understanding dynamics of avalanches can contribute reducing risk settlements and infrastructure. The main knowledge gaps in field research concern (i) properties flow regimes transitions between them, (ii) mass change due erosion deposition. These two aspects are intertwined determine not only reach avalanche, but also its velocity, course impact pressure. Experimental studies described comprise a wide range scales from small rotating drums real avalanches. In addition, several papers describe post-event surveys specific analyze them using different methods techniques, demonstrating valuable qualitative insight be gained way. theoretical developments exploratory fluid–particle interactions comprehensive review half century modeling Russia.

Remote Sensing Tools for Snow and Avalanche Research
Since the first images acquired from airplanes (1915) and satellites (1960), remote sensing has had a great impact in diverse number of fields such as meteorology, military, topographic mapping, archaeology and forestry. Today remote sensing has even become a common tool for the general public, with location searches using high spatial resolution (< 1m) imagery on GoogleEarth or Bing Maps. The ...
متن کاملSnow and avalanche test sites French avalanche research: experimental test sites
This paper contains a short description of the experimental Lautaret site dedicated to avalanche dynamic studies. Since the seventies, many experimental campaigns allowed measuring different avalanche parameters such as velocity, height and pressure. Technical development have been also carried in this site and are presented here. More recently, a chute for physical modelling of avalanche motio...
متن کاملSnow Avalanche Admonisher through Wireless Sensor Network
The temperature reaches around -40C to -60C in hilly and mountainous areas during winters which may lead to many probable natural hazards. Defence personnel as well as civilians are unaware of these hazards. Amongst all the natural hazards, Snow Avalanche is one of the major hazards which has the probability of occurrence in the above listed temperature range. The aim of this paper is to bring ...
متن کاملComputational snow avalanche simulation in forested terrain
Two-dimensional avalanche simulation software operating in three-dimensional terrain is widely used for hazard zoning and engineering to predict runout distances and impact pressures of snow avalanche events. Mountain forests are an effective biological protection measure against avalanches; however, the protective capacity of forests to decelerate or even to stop avalanches that start within f...
متن کاملSnow and avalanche: the influence of forest on snowpack stability
Snow avalanches are among the most important disturbances that affect mountain ecosystems, influencing forest dynamics, establishment and mortality processes. At the same time, forests can affect the likelihood of avalanche release and can thus protect human settlements and infrastructures. The forest protective role is largely a function of forest stand structure, snow characteristics and topo...
